The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is responsible for rendering Respiratory Care inclusive of associated diagnostic services ordered by and in collaboration with the physician on all tours of duty with minimal or no direct supervision. The incumbent is assigned to the Respiratory Care Service Line and performs all aspects of Respiratory Care in accordance to established policies and procedures. ***If you are not a Current Permanent Federal Employees or Past/Current/Upcoming VHA HPT Graduates, apply to vacancy CBST-11167154-21-LA*** Duties performed include, but are not limited to the following: Performs emergency tracheal intubation procedures; Responsible for airway management during cardiac or respiratory arrest, often assisting with other aspects of CPR; Responds to all STAT pages regarding a patient's respiratory, EKGs, and ABGs status making an assessment an providing emergency ventilatory and/or oxygenation; Initiates mechanical ventilation, selecting the equipment and settings relative to the patient's needs; Monitors mechanical ventilation via ABG results, chest auscultation, chest X-rays, bedside pulmonary function, clinical observation and adjusts parameters accordingly; Maintains the patient on mechanical ventilation providing periodic checks, appropriate troubleshooting and equipment maintenance; Provides airway management to include suctioning, securing airway, and other hygiene functions; Administers and monitors oxygen per policy and procedure manual; Initiates hyperinflation therapies to include incentive spirometry or Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing in accordance to physician's orders and appropriateness of care; Performs Arterial Blood Gas punctures; Measures static compliance, critical lung volumes and lows, and pressures for trend information.
