The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Therapy Assistant. The Therapy Assistant will function in our Recreation Therapy Service. Recreation therapy assistants perform a crucial role in supporting the primary recreation therapist or creative arts therapists in carrying out treatment services. Responsible for the daily planning and implementation of recreation and creative arts treatment through programs, services, and interventions on specific units and area coverage such as: rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient, and extended care. The Recreation Therapy Assistant (RTA) respects all Veterans, their caregivers, and extended families by exhibiting sensitivity to their needs, tolerances, and individual differences including values, cultural, social background and ethnic group. More specifically, the RTA meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Duties of the RTA include, but are not limited to; Consistently communicates and treats customs in courteous tactful, and respectful manner. Provides consistent information according to policies and procedures. Uses sound professional skills, objectivity, and insight to respond constructively to both positive and negative reactions to treatment. Facilitates therapeutic process and progress. Pan and carry out highly specialized and diversified treatment of a wide variety of acutely and clinically complex medical patients whose physical and mental condition requires the application of nonstandard, in addition to standard treatment procedures and approaches. Plan, implement, and conduct ongoing highly specialized and diversified recreation therapy treatment interventions for patients with varying degrees of impairments. Independently applies wide-ranging knowledge of recreation therapy concepts, principle, practices, procedures, roles, strategies, techniques, and treatment interventions/ modalities. Utilizes knowledge of a variety of standardized assessments tools in a systematic approach to collect comprehensive and accurate data to determine a course of action and subsequent individualized treatment in order to providing a more comprehensive intervention under the guidance or review of recreation therapist. Informs the patient of his/her responsibility in the collection of assessment information and seeks collaboration in the process. Interprets medical information in relation to disabilities, planning treatment, evaluating the condition and progress of patients, development of therapeutic techniques and devices, evaluating and advising on limitations and usefulness of recreation therapy interventions, and orienting/ training/ supervising student therapists, volunteers, and/or compensated work therapy (CWT) workers. Applies the rehabilitation process in meeting the needs of the patient and exercises judgment in making recurrent and wide-ranging changes in procedures and approaches to enable the patient to achieve maximum rehab potential. Applies individualized behavioral interventions and therapeutic procedures designed to reduce stress and anxiety, build confidence, diminish negative behaviors, recover of basic motor functioning, problem-solving and reason abilities. Develop compensatory strategies to master skills necessary to sustain and independent leisure lifestyle. Assesses patient data, make a preliminary determination of their needs, develop treatment goals and objectives and implement patient treatment plans. Applies specialized skill in the application, implementation, and conducting of evidence-based strategies, modalities, and interventions. Independently identifies, adapts, and/or recommends adapts, and/or recommends adaptive and assistive devices and equipment to maximize patient's functionality. Work Schedule: Flexible Tour of Duty, Days will vary and will include weekends, evenings and holidays. Possible hours include: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.; 12:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.; or 1:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
