JOB SUMMARY The Chaplain II provides advanced spiritual care as part of the holistic, multidisciplinary team approach when helping patients deal with or recover from their illness or injury. Provides compassionate spiritual and emotional support for all Baylor Scott & White Health patients, family members and staff, regardless of faith background or religious affiliation. Participates in the training and professional development of staff and oversees volunteers and residents. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE 1. Plans, coordinates, and conducts religious services for patients, their families and staff including weekly worship, memorial services, baptisms, weddings, anointing and coordinating bereavement needs. 2. Is responsible for counseling and preparing employees, students, patients and families for death, identifying grief and how to cope, and offer bereavement counseling. 3. May conduct required initial patient assessment within required time frame as per Medicare Conditions of Participation or conducts a pastoral assessment of a patient's spiritual and emotional status and the need for spiritual care. 4. Supports the end-of-life care for patients by offering pastoral support and counseling to patients and families. 5. Collaborates with physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, and ancillary staff as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team in assessing patient needs and to strengthen patient care. 6. May Conduct Hospice general education to new patient referrals for Hospice services. 7. Develops relationships with local churches, community agencies and service organizations which supports the hospital community. Recruits, trains, and coordinates pastoral care volunteers. 8. Documents and maintains individual records for spiritual counseling for patients. Performs other position appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional and courteous manner. KEY SUCCESS FACTORS 1. Knowledge of philosophical systems and religions. 2. Knowledge of the principles and methods of pastoral care and the role of a chaplain in an institutional setting. 3. Knowledge of the religious beliefs and practices of various faiths, groups, and denominations. 4. Able to communicate thoughts clearly; both verbally and in writing. 5. Interpersonal and listening skills. 6. Skill in counseling patients, family members and staff. 7. Ability to counsel and comfort individuals during periods of stress. 8. Ability to actively participate as a member of a professional therapeutic team. 9. Denominational endorsement for chaplaincy, ordination or commissioning to ministry preferred.
