The incumbent operates independently and as a team member to coordinate and perform responsibly all therapeutic radiation treatments. These treatments are performed with and without 3D treatment planning, IMRT, CT simulation and other techniques to achieve either a biological cure of the disease or improvement in the quality of the remainder of the patient's life. Major Duties include but are not limited to the following: Possesses knowledge of disease process, co-morbid conditions, and other factors relating to individual patients in selecting appropriate positioning devices for procedure to be performed; Schedules patients in a manner so as to optimize linear accelerator/simulator times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient who may need immediate treatment; Prepares room and equipment for patient according to prescription regarding immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, lead protection devices, etc; Positions patient for treatment with accuracy according to prescription and cushions/shields patient as appropriate; Maintains current licensure as required by state or national authority. Maintains ARRT certification in radiation therapy with a minimum documented 24 hours of continuing education per biennium. CPR certification and recertification is required in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines; Responsible for weekly stocking and inventory of all radiation oncology supplies and related materials; Performs irregular hour emergency simulations and radiation treatments on standby, 24 hour per day coverage, with availability within 1 hour from receipt of call so that proper and effective emergency care can be given to the patient; Remains current with new developments in the field of radiation therapy and able to utilize the new technologies as they become available; Participates in reviewing, revising or authoring policies and procedures as needed; Maintains patient markings. Observe patient for side effects such as skin irritation, nausea, and hair loss to assess patients' reaction to treatment; Works with Radiation Oncologists, Dosimetrists, Department Nurse, and Clerical staff, as a member of the radiation therapy team to effectively and efficiently accomplish the goals of the radiation therapy team; Obtains electronic radiation treatment field images. (OBI, CBCT, MV) and photos. Instructs and mentors new hires within the department; Participates in departmental PI (Performance Improvement) activities; and Performs other related duties as assigned.
