The School of Art and Design in the College of Creative Arts at West Virginia University is seeking applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Therapy/Art Education commencing August 2018.
Duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Art Therapy and/or Art Education BFA/MA program, specifically art methods classes for art education majors and courses in the visual arts therapy graduate certificate program. The successful candidate will conduct a research/scholarly activity agenda appropriate to the discipline of art education and visual arts therapy. Development of outreach activities and participation in University and School committees, advising, recruitment, professional service and participation in faculty governance is expected.
Date of Appointment: The position is a full-time, nine-month, visiting assistant professor in Visual Arts Therapy/Art Education. The position is a one-year appointment, starting August 10, 2018, that can be renewable up to three years.

Qualifications The successful candidate will have: •an earned doctorate in Visual Arts Therapy or a closely related field completed by August 2018. Having dual degrees in Visual Arts Therapy and/or Art Education is preferred; •be board certified or eligible for board certification through the Art Therapy Credential Board; •expertise teaching core coursework in visual arts therapy, including advanced art-making classes for students with special needs; •evidence of ongoing research and scholarly activity; •expertise in managing and advising student culminating projects/theses; •expertise in a specific area of visual arts therapy as it relates to learners in the K-12 classroom, specifically among students with special needs is preferred; •an ability to work independently and collegially as part of a cohesive team to achieve WVU's programmatic goals and mission.

About West Virginia University
Art Education and Visual Arts Therapy are located in the School of Art and Design in the College of Creative Arts. The School of Art and Design awards BFA + Certification for students wishing to work as art teachers in the PreK-Adult classroom. Supported by their experiences in the studio arts, art history, and education, students in the four-and-a-half-year undergraduate program engage in various types of teaching and related activities while still having the full studio art-making experience in a concentration of their choice. They observe teachers in the public schools, work with these teachers on special projects and conclude with a teaching practicum with carefully selected elementary and secondary school teachers. The College offers both a Master of Arts Degree in Art Education as well as a graduate certificate in visual arts therapy. This certificate is aimed at providing additional training for art teachers to use visual arts therapy within their teaching practice.
